Where Do We Come From?

The story of Dixie Gem, located since 1972 in Greenville, SC, begins with two boys collecting meteorites and seashells. It didn’t start out as a business venture, just a personal passion, but when John and Larry Turner got the opportunity to buy a local rock shop in 1986, they jumped at the chance. Still young men, they decided to strike out on their own and create a unique and distinctive business. Nearly 40 years later, the brothers have a shop full of rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils. Trying to sum up the business is a near impossible task because they stock so many unique, one-of-a-kind items, and once they’re gone they’re gone for good. You might stop by and find a tooth from a mammoth or a boulder-sized meteorite. There’s no telling what will be on the floor at any given time, but one thing is certain: it will be unique and beautiful.

Located in a former gas station, Dixie Gem’s exterior is far from audacious. The business has thrived for so long due mainly to word of mouth. Some of our regular clienteles have been coming by the shop since they were children. Many of them now are bringing their children to experience the shop and learn from John and Larry. They come for our stunning items, our low prices, and our ever-evolving inventory. Whether you live locally or you’re just passing through, stop by for a visit.
